Yankicha, Kuril Islands : Yankicha is a small island in the Kuril Chain that is essentially the caldera of a volcano poking up through the sea. The Kuril Biocomplexity Project visited this island in 2007 for research and R&R at the end of our voyage. The beaches inside feature sulfurous vents and boiling hot springs!

Manatuto, East Timor / Timor-Leste : Our research team spent two weeks excavating at this site near Manatuto. Research was directed towards understanding the relationship between foreign trade and environmental change in the region. Deforestation and erosion of the landscape may have been caused by exploitation of sandalwood in the past 1,000 years.
